Organic offers the largest selection of natural pest controls in the South
Puget Sound area. For many years we have been a major source of information
on the use of natural pest controls suited for organic gardening. We do not,
however, limit our product offerings to the continually changing list of
officially "certified organic" materials. Chemically sensitive persons or
each person needs to assume responsibility for determining the safety or
other criteria to be met with respect to use of any given product.
B.L.O. provides a number of leaflets and pamphlets on various aspects and
methods for controlling pests of gardens, lawns and households including
those published by Thurston County, local health departments, and
environmental agencies. We generally advise the least toxic and least
polluting product or method for control of specific pests and we encourage
nutritional approaches (i.e. proper plant fertilization) in preference to
spraying for pest control. We care about the protection of wildlife, fish,
pets and people.
B.L.O. carries the Safer line and several lesser-known brands of natural and
organic-approved pest control products, including botanicals, barriers,
deterrents, traps, etc. Some very effective and safe products include the
Sluggo and Worry-Free brand slug baits which employ iron phosphate (a
naturally occurring material) and two deer deterrants, Liquid Fence
(contains garlic and rotten egg derivatives) and Plantskydd (a form of
micronized bloodmeal). Our customers swear by the effectiveness of these
deterrent products.
